The Pros and Cons of Ethnic Identification Essay - 914 Words

Many circumstances oblige people to move from their native country to a foreign one. From this movement of migration have emerged many ethnic groups. An ethnic group is a restraint number of persons living in a larger society and sharing the same distinct cultural heritage. Some people tend to bury their habits and accommodate to the new way of life. However others hold on to their identity and try to identify their race and maintain it. This enriches societies and makes them multi-racial. Therefore, every ethnic group is essential to complete the mosaic. Although they are sometimes threatened, minorities must fight to preserve their principles. Why must they fight? Because racial identification has many positive impacts on the members.†¦show more content†¦In fact, the higher is the level of racial self-esteem, the higher becomes the level of personal self-esteem. Adolescents in particular need to feel that the society accepts them as they are with their distinct identity. They can’t be comfortable nor have a good attitude unless they find that their race is taken into consideration. Moral comfort confers to ethnic youth purpose and impetus. They work hard to achieve their goals and reach their ambitions. Not to mention that minorities occupy the same area and support each other. They exploit different resources and contribute to the economical development. The best example is the Armenians in Lebanon. They have ritualized their history by transmitting their food habits and their mother tongue. In addition, individuals identify clearly with the heritage of the group through religious beliefs and social values. If their culture doesn’t allow a specific behavior, they stick to the tradition. In fact, Garnier and Stein (1998) found that adolescents who had a stronger commitment to traditional values were less likely to engage in drug use while those who were committed to non-traditional values were at greater risk for drug use. Furthermore, minorities teach others how to be close enough. Their sense of belonging is incredibly high because they know that only their neighbors are remaining from their race. They share the same interests and would take risks to help their left-overs persevere. Substance Abuse Treatment and Proposition 36 - 1208 Words

With California jails and prisons still struggling with finding a reform for non-violent drug offenders the states recidivism rates continue to reach unprecedented numbers. Between 1983 and 1998, drug admissions to state and federal prisons increased sixteen-fold, from over 10,000 drug admissions in 1983 to almost 167,000 new prison entries for drug offenses in 1998 (Worrall et al, 2009). This has been a direct result of our legal system incarcerating offenders who have substance abuse related issues instead of providing a way for treatment or rehabilitation outside of incarceration. Through public policies regarding criminal justice interventions that address drug use and crime, an initiative was created to provide treatment services†¦show more content†¦As a result of the law not clearly expressing which drug violations were eligible for the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act (SACPA), guidelines had to be set for which non-violent drug possession offenses and whi ch offenders were deemed eligible for Prop-36 sentencing. The primary goal of the Proposition 36 program is to divert substance using offenders from likely incarceration into the community where they can access and benefit from substance abuse treatment (Evans et al, 2011). With this goal in mind thousands of offenders who were destined for a jail cell could receive the proper treatment needed and our states recidivism rate would go down. This was not only a goal of Proposition 36 but a great success. SACPA is considered a successful program with tens of thousands of offenders enrolling each year, resulting in outcomes comparable to those commonly observed in residential treatment facilities. Although the determination of a cost benefit ratio for SACPA is beyond the scope of the available data, the savings of $2317 per offender allows us to project about $97.3 million in savings over the long term for the nearly 42,000 offenders affected during the first year of SACPA implementation (Anglin et al. 2013). Communicative Competence Language Pedagogy †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Communicative Competence Language Pedagogy. Answer: Introduction: In Australia, as well as many other countries in the world, engineers are expected to demonstrate high levels of competence before they are allowed to practice engineering. The competencies they are expected to fulfill are outlined in the Engineer Australia- Chartered Status Handbook (Canale, M, 2014). Professional engineers are expected to take responsibility for their projects and programs (. In order to enable the engineers to bring together technical and non-technical knowledge in the attempt to solve complex problems and manage risks, engineering competence plays a critical role in the process. Knowledge and Skills Base competence consist of, comprehensive, theory-based understanding of physical and natural disciplines related to the engineering field, conceptual understanding information sciences and numerical skills which reinforce the specific engineering discipline, in-depth understanding of specialist organs of the engineering practice, knowledge of engineering contextual f actors impacting design practice of the discipline and perspicacity of information development and exploration guidelines within the specific engineering field. The first element of knowledge and skill base competence is comprehensive, theory-based understanding of the underpinning physical and natural sciences and all the applicable fundamentals in that specific engineering discipline (LoBiondo-Wood, G., Haber, J, 2017). For an engineer to indicate that he/she has this competence they have engaged with the specific engineering discipline at a phenomenological level as well as apply engineering fundamentals and sciences to systematically investigate, analyze and innovate solutions to complex engineering problems and other aspects of engineering. The other element is In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge in engineering. A competent engineer should adroitly apply advanced technical skills and knowledge in at least one engineering specialist domain (.De Los Ros-Carmen and Lopez,. ,2015)A competent engineer should, therefore, identify one field of engineering and specialize in it so that they can have a comprehensive understanding of all the principles governing that specific discipline. Engineering Application Ability Competence Competent engineers should have the ability to apply all the technical and non-technical knowledge as well as all the engineering principles applicable in the specific engineering discipline (Saorn, J. L., De La Torre-Cantero, J, 2017) . Engineering Application Ability has two main elements namely application of established engineering methods in solving complex problems and fluent application of engineering tools, techniques and resources. An engineer can successfully demonstrate the application of established engineering ability through various activities. The engineer should identify, characterize, predict performance, determine and analyze causes and effects and apply simplifying assumptions in developing sustainable conclusions (Takey, S. M., de Carvalho, M. M., 2015). By diagnosing and taking the suitable strategies with data and documented information the engineer will ensure that all the project activities are based on fundamental engineering practices. The engineer should research methods and research-based knowledge to investigate complex problems, conceptualize all the alternative engineering approaches, and evaluate their potential outcomes in problem solving. An engineer should have the competence to proficiently identify, select and apply the components, materials, systems, resources and devices that are relevant to the specific engineering discipline. The engineer should also demonstrate the ability to determine engineering tool properties such as performance, safety working limits as well as failure modes (Li, Z. H. U., Junhua, S. H. I., Xiaozhou, L. I. A. N., 2017). The engineer should also design and conduct experiments using the various appropriate tools and be able to analyze and interpret the results using the fundamental engineering criteria. Planning and quantifying performance for the full lifecycle of the project is also an ability that a qualified engineer should demonstrate as they try to solve engineering problems. Professional and Personal Attribute Competence Professional and personal attribute competence is also a key element of any qualified engineer in Australia (Carter, D. Alcott, B., Lattuca, 2016). There are various elements of professional and personal competence namely, ethical behavior and personal responsibility, in effect written and oral communication in both formal and informal domain, innovative, creative and proactive demeanor, professional management and use of information, effective team contribution and leadership and finally orderly self-management and professional conduct In order for an engineer to demonstrate personal accountability and ethical conduct, they must indicate the commitment to uphold the Engineers Australia- Code of Ethics in all their engineering projects (Lindberg, O., Rantatalo, O., 2015). The engineer should observe of the established engineering norms in the specific engineering discipline. He should also understand the importance of certification and risk management mechanisms that are expected to be observed. Accountability for other engineers and the safety of the environment is one of the personal attributes a competent engineer should demonstrate in the process of solving any problem. He should also have and demonstrate knowledge of fundamental principles in rights of property and protection. A competent engineer in any engineering discipline in Australia should possess effective written and oral communication skills in both formal and informal domain (Canale, M. (2014). Effective communication is a critical tool for engineers to pass information about their project, coordinating the various activities involved and promote good relationships with other team members (Khairullina, E. R. Masalimova, A. R, 2016). Good communication skills will also boost the engineer's ability to acquire relevant information in the field about their project. Qualities of a USQ Graduate USQ policies have been established to provide guidelines on the development of curriculums and facilitate proper learning and instill employability qualities and skills for bachelor degree students. Every USQ graduate is expected to exhibit several qualities and meet certain standards upon graduation (Kinash, S., Dowling, D, 2015). The qualities of a USQ graduate consist of discipline expertise, professionalism, global citizenship, scholarship and lifelong learning. The graduates are trained to demonstrate and practice these qualities in various fields they trained in including the various engineering disciplines. In terms of professionalisms, the graduates should elaborately demonstrate the relevant skills required for the students to participate in their chosen working environment. They should observe the professional ethics governing their line of work (Gorodetskaya Khramov, V. Y, 2015). Global citizenship requires the graduate to have the capability to connect the theory learnt in the discipline and practice to promote the sustainability of economies, environments and communities in a global point of view. Scholarship qualities require the graduate to have the urge and ability to make a scholarly contribution in their area of work and the society. The university also expects that the graduates should pose lifelong autonomous learning skills upon graduation. Engineering Australia is the national authority responsible for the accreditation of all engineering programs in Australia. The authority provides guidelines for engineering educators and curriculum developers to ensure the graduates have the required skills and knowledge for them to practice engineering in Australia (Meenakshi, S., Mohanty, S. (2015). The accreditation criteria used by Engineers Australia are categorized into quality systems, the academic program and the operating environment. According to Engineers Australia, the generic attributes of an engineering student include, underpinning knowledge of information systems, mathematics, physical sciences and engineering fundamentals suitable to the learning discipline. Secondly, the ability to apply the above to solve complex engineering and technology problems observation of all the engineering codes and risk management systems included. A specialization in at least one engineering discipline is one of the attributes. The other attribute is professional development such as effective communication, leadership skills, strong team culture and proper information management systems. Last but not least, application of engineering principles, ethics and responsibilities of practicing engineering. The Engineers Australia generic attributes of engineer graduates are mainly the qualities that employers would desire to find in an engineering graduate in Australia. The attributes concentrate enhancing competence in the various engineering disciplines in the country (Thurner, Bottcher Kamper, 2014). A graduate possessing these attributes will be competent enough to handle the complex engineering problems and promote the sustainability of communities and the world at large. Reflection on Researched Definitions of Hard and Soft Skills Desired by the Industry The various skills possessed by graduates specifically engineering graduates can be categorized into hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills refer to all the teachable skill that can also be measured such as reading, typing and math while soft skills are not tangible and cannot be quantified easily (Ramadi, E., Nasr, K., 2016). Soft skills include how a graduate can get along with others, etiquette and how they engage with other team members. There are differences between these two categories of skills and it is a competent engineering graduate should possess and have the ability to demonstrate them in their various projects. For an engineering graduate to be good at hard skills they require IQ or smarts whereas for soft skills all they require is EQ or let us say emotional intelligence. The hard skills can be taught and learnt easily while the soft skills mainly depend on the personality of the individual (Thomas Day, 2014). Soft skills such as stress management, etiquette and self-confidence depend on the emotional intelligence of the graduate. For hard skills, the rules stay constant even if one moves from one company to another while soft skills can change depending on the people we interact with and the company culture. For instance, the procedures for doing calculus would not change if one moves from one company to another but the communication skills will have to be adjusted to some extent depending on the new audience and existing communication structures. Most of the soft skills cannot be learnt in school or from books but they are acquired through experience and trial and error methods. Both the hard skills and soft skills are equally important for graduate engineers. The hard skills are an essential part of solving the complex engineering problems but the soft skills have to facilitate the problem-solving process (Holtkamp, Jokinen, Pawlowski, 2015). Hard skills help engineering graduates to learn and apply the fundamental engineering principles to solve problems faced by the community and humanity at large. The engineering graduates are dealing with human beings, therefore, soft skills play a role in how they relate to others and this determines the success of their various projects. By the end of the 21st century, the population of the world is predicted to be about 9.5 billion and many engineers are concerned that we are heading inexorably to a point where the earth natural resources will not be sufficient to sustain such a huge population. Population growth increases the pressure on food production, energy supply, land use, the environment, the climate and the infrastructure and this is a threat to the sustainability of humanity. Many of these challenges can be overcome by successful application of existing engineering proficiency all over the world. This is according to a report published by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The demand for water is expected to increase by 30 % by the year 2100. Augmented automation, mechanization, and application of innovations can help remedy the situation. The project suggests building giant ponds to collect and hoard rainwater to reload underground aquifers (Hurst, A., Jobidon, E., Bedi, S, 2016). The planet is covered with large water bodies and it would be ironical if water needs of the increased population cannot be met (Chen, Sivakumar Peart, 2016). The project suggests that engineers should use developments in desalination technology to boost the utilization of the water covering the earth surface. The technology can be used to refine the water and make it fit for human consumption and that will make the population sustainable in terms of water need s. The effectiveness of Our Team in Developing and Sharing Researched Information for Our Project Population growth has been a key concern for engineers all over the world with the rapidly increasing growth rates and it is therefore important to conduct thorough research on the topic and share the information developed in the research. Teamwork is important since it brings together a range of knowledge and skills for the common good of solving complex engineering problems. The contribution of every team member is important in ensuring the project objectives are met (Zamyatina Mozgaleva, 2014). Our team was well coordinated in obtaining information from various sources and good communication skills enabled an efficient sharing of the information to all our team members. The project can only be a success with the collective contribution of the team members and as it is required for engineering graduates to demonstrate a strong team culture in their working environment. Pony Boy did a very admirable thing by choosing to ignore these names and continue to strive to the best of his abilities; this, in my opinion, is an exceedingly amendable quality to possess. Suddenly it was deathly quiet. We had all frozen. Nobody in my family had ever hit me. Nobody When Diary hit Pony Boy a lot of feelings would have been rushing through his head, a big one would have been Dally doesnt love me, nobody does. This particular feeling Is quite common in teenagers but one thing that we need to realism Is that we are loved UN-conditionally. At the present time, Pony Boy TLD realism this but towards the end of the novel he soon becomes aware of It, this Is a key turning point In the novel. Love Is a very strong emotion and shouldnt be taken for granted or forgotten, although it can be lost within the darkness of society and stress, it can be found in even the smallest of smiles. Being labeled by society was something that was a main focus in the book and is still a big thing in the society today. Although people are trying to get the message heard, it still isnt getting through to certain people. But I goat do something. It seems like theres goat be someplace without greasers or Soc, with just people. Plain, ordinary people. Pony Boy is longing for a world without a social hierarchy, a world that everyone is treated as equals, rather than on how much money they have or on their appearance. Personally I feel quite strongly on this topic because as a child I was treated differently because of my hair color and because of the fact that I also wore glasses. This Is a very degrading feeling and It can make you feel horrible. When I was reading the book I kept trying to put myself In the position of the greasers and how they would feel after being discriminated by the cocos. This labeling. S. E Hint has given good insight to the life of a teenage boy that has been brought up in gang and hasnt had the best life but still ends up coming to terms with some of the cocos and his other family members. Pony Boy was a very strong character whose life wasnt so good but he still managed to enjoy the majority of it. With all the drama that had carried on during this novel I think that Pony Boy did an exceptional Job of staying strong and keeping to terms with his feelings. He is a very empathetic character, who will always try to see things from both points of view, l mean I cant take sides. Itd be a lot easier if I could be I see both sides. Although he did snap and run, when he realized how his family were feeling, he was starting to second guess his choices and admit that he was wrong to do so; admitting youre wrong to someone else is hard, but admitting it to yourself is the hardest. This to me demonstrates that even though he has not been brought up in the best of places, he still has a bright future ahead of him.

Reading response Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 6

Reading response - Assignment Example Sagoff however, argues against this idea (Sagoff 2). Sagoff states that animals and trees can be given the same rights as human beings (3). It further states that it is hard to protect animals just because they are capable of suffering. In his argument against environmentalism, he gives an example that if man is to be prevented from hunting a deer, then a cat should also not hunt a mouse. This, the author says is one of the reasons why environmentalism principle cannot be fully implemented. He also argues against the claim by this group that groups and organizations like the Wildlife Fund have failed in their duties. Sagoff indicates that the duties of such organizations are based on biological factors and not on total environmentalism. The second group which the author talks about is the liberators who argue that animals have legal rights. This group advocate for equality. According to the author, the group advocates that it is the moral duty of the human beings to protect the environment and other wild animals since they have rights (Sagoff 5). This second group extends the moral boundaries so as to include the animals and all other creatures including trees. The liberators believe that tree and animals have legal standing and because of this, their interest should be represented in the courts, just the same way human interest is represented in court. This, the author says is totally impossible. Sagoff goes ahead to indicate that the welfare of all animals is in the hands of the society (4). Moreover, the society should not only attend to the needs of the domestic animals, but also the animals without help who are miserably out there in the wild. This he said is because the domestic animals are not in any special class. In defending his claim, the author argues that his stand should not be taken to be similar to those of animal liberators

Changes made to New York State labor law due to social media, gender Essay

Changes made to New York State labor law due to social media, gender expression, and bullying - Essay Example Under the federal law of New York State, discrimination may occur when a person is treated differently in a manner that causes an adverse impact to an employee based on his age, gender, disability, sexual orientation amongst other forms of discrimination. New York State Labor Law on Social Media Social media affects most aspects of individuals including employees, and therefore, employers must be able to familiarize themselves with the legal ramifications or implications of their use by the employees. New York introduced legislation in 2012 that prohibited employers from delving into the social media account of would-be applicants for the employment opportunities in their firms or employees through the soliciting of social media accounts or requiring them to log into their accounts. New York State labor laws also protect employees from any disciplinary action or their employment from termination on account of activities done in the social media when they are off-duty. It is important to note that the labor law concerning labor law in New York is written in broad terms to prohibit the employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants for their lawful engagement in social media during non-working hours and outside the premises of the employer, though the engagement in social media may seem contrary to the employer’s interests, practices and policies. The New York Labor Law Section 201-d (2) (c) prohibits the discrimination of an employee for his participation in legal recreational activities outside the working hours and the recreational activities are defined as any lawful activity done at the leisure time for which an employee is not compensated but the employee only engages in it for recreational purposes.1 This section however has not adequately addressed whether social networking can be grouped as a recreational activity, and therefore an employee who engages in an activity that goes contrary to the business interest of the company wil l only be prosecuted by the courts on a case-by-case basis.2 New York State Labor Law on Gender Expression New York has enacted different legislation that protects employees who may suffer from the decisions of their employers due to discrimination based on gender. The labor laws of this state prohibits any employer from having considerations based on your gender at the time of hiring, promoting, transferring, setting wages or hours of work, or when firing any employee from duty. The prohibition against discrimination based on gender is enshrined in Title VII which is a federal law in New York State. This also covers sex discrimination against female employees that may arise from practices or policies that affect the female employees in a negative manner because of pregnancy, child birth and other medical conditions that usually affect females only. The New York State Human Rights Law also expressly prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy,3 and the Equal Pay Act is a federal law of New York State that requires that employers remunerate men and women equal pay for equal work done within the same or similar establishment.4 Two job descriptions can be deemed to be similar or the same if and when each job requires the same skills and

Manipulation of Employees :: Business

The concerns that managers have regarding the subject of motivation and how to get the most effort from their employees are valid concerns because. The reality of today’s economy have many people living paycheck to paycheck and sometimes working two and three jobs just to make ends meet. Although many people are grateful to have jobs, they feel that they are living in times of uncertainty and worry everyday if they will have jobs tomorrow. The stress of dealing with the rising cost of everything not only makes motivation more challenging, it has caused people to be more anxious and distrustful. Trying to keep employees motivated in these times of uncertainty is indeed a big concern. Robbins and Judge define motivation by means of three elements. The first element is defined as being the process that account for an individual’s intensity which is concerned with how hard a person tries. The second element is direction that benefits the organization and the third element is persistence which is a measure of how long a person can maintain effort. Motivation is also driven by certain situations that vary between individuals and within individuals, at different times. (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p.186) These elements should not only be expected from employees but from managers as well. The key to understanding what employees’ motivations are, and how managers can support them in their aims and objectives, is to understand that different people are motivated by different things. Managers should make a conscience effort to stay in touch with the interest, skills and abilities that their employees possess. Given the opportunity, it is possible that employees can provide valuable information about how to motivate each other to do a better job. Maslow needs theory has received wide recognition particularly among practicing managers. Perhaps it could provide some valuable insight in motivation. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs â€Å"hypothesized that within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs. Maslow separated the five needs into higher and lower orders. Physiological and safety needs were described as lower-order needs and social, esteem, and self-actualization as higher-order needs. As each of these needs becomes substantially satisfied, the next need becomes dominant. So if you want to motivate someone, you need to understand what level of the hierarchy that person is currently on and focus on satisfying the needs at or above that level.† (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p.187) Psychologist Frederick Herzberg contends that â€Å"if we want to motivate people on their jobs, emphasize factors associated with the work itself or to outcomes directly derived from it.

Once More to the Lake

During his vacation White notices that although the arrival to the lake was deferent, as well as the boats which were on the lake, the lake Itself had not changed at all. The commute to the lake had changed from what E. B. White had originally experienced as a child. The trip to the lake was now a completely new experience. Originally, getting to the lake was a long, highly anticipated Journey, starting with the train station and loading luggage onto horse buggies which would take them on a ten mile trip leading to the lake. The anticipation would grow as the carriage got closer to the lake.Coming over the last hill to see the lake and other campers cheering for your arrival was full of excitement. Now, there was no train station and there was no carriage ride. The excitement had been diminished by the newer paved road which led to within one half mile of the lake. The road now was the cause of campers to pull right up to their camp and unload in a quick amount of time and without be ing detected by fellow campers. Another change which had transpired was the updates of the camp Itself. The path to the lake was not the only one that had changed through the years.Walking three tracks in the road, but two. There used to be a middle track that was made by the horses pulling the carriages of people to dinner at the restaurant. Now, the path no longer was one for horses. Also, the store's parking lot used to be dirt and gravel, but is now paved for customers driving their cars to buy â€Å"manufactured drinks† rather than the root beer and birch beer White would buy when he was a child. Change was expected by E. B. White, but the one change he did not enjoy was the motor boats cruising across the water of the lake.Their newer designs with the outboard motors were unsettling to White and disturbed the peacefulness of the lake. The older boats had an inboard motor which was a much softer, relaxing sound which aided in the relaxation of a summer vacation. Even the way the boats were operated had changed as well. The older boats were not equipped with reverse, so landing the boat at the dock required a more sense of confidence, so you didn't crash into the dock with a speedy approach. Though there were many changes, one thing had not changed and that is the lake itself.Through all the changes E. B. White still managed to grasp the feeling that time had not really passed by because the lake remained the same to him. It is the one thing that kept people returning. The smells of the lake, the activities done by people on the lake, the fish that swam in its water, the people and the people too all had remained as White once knew it. He is fishing with his son at one point and a dragonfly lands on the end of his fishing pole and he describes that moment as if no mime had passed since he went fishing with his own dad as a boy.Even the paddle boat they were fishing from was the same color and had the same details as he remembered as if it were the e xact boat he paddled in before. One of the afternoons of their week-long stay a thunderstorm came and sent everyone returning to their camp. There White watched the storm come in Just as he had before. It was a fascinating spectacle for him to see the lightning, hear the thunder, and watch the rain fall on the lake as the storm moved on. As the storm left, people would come ace out to the lake in their swimsuits to swim in the rain. A professional has specialized knowledge and skill which can only be acquired through prolonged education and experience. Such skill and experience form the basis of objective standards of professional competence that separate the practicing professional from their peers and measure the competence of such professional. This professional knowledge must also be intellectual in nature. The second characteristic of professionalism is responsibility. General responsibility creates the moral responsibility of soldiers and helps us understand the set of values which guide us. In addition, however, soldiers must also possess the values of other human beings and question service to a society which does not respect these values. These values include justice, common courtesy, human dignity and humbleness. A government which does not respect these values is illegitimate and cannot be said to serve the society it directs. In the case of United States Army soldiers, the values of the United States must be examined in the context of the military profession. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution provide clear statements of these values and Ethics. Ethics are standards by which one should act based on values. Values are core beliefs such as duty, honor, and integrity that motivate attitudes and actions. Not all values are ethical values (integrity is; happiness is not). Ethical values relate to what is right and wrong and thus take precedence over nonethical values when making ethical decisions. Honesty. Being truthful, straightforward, and candid are aspects of honesty. Truthfulness is required. Deceptions are usually easily uncovered. Lies erode credibility and undermine public confidence. Untruths told for seemingly altruistic reasons (to prevent hurt feelings, to promote good will, etc.) are nonetheless resented by the recipients. Straightforwardness adds frankness to truthfulness and is usually necessary to promote public confidence and to ensure effective, efficient conduct of operations. Truths presented in such a way as to lead recipients to confusion, misinterpretation, or inaccurate conclusions are not productive. Such indirect deceptions can promote ill-will and erode openness, especially when there is an expectation of frankness. Candor is the forthright offering of unrequested information. It is necessary according to the gravity of the situation and the nature of the relationships. Candor is required when a reasonable person would feel betrayed if the information were withheld. In some circumstances, silence is dishonest; yet in other circumstances, disclosing information would be wrong and perhaps unlawful. Integrity. Being faithful to one’s convictions is part of integrity. Following principles, acting with honor, maintaining independent judgment, and performing duties with impartiality help to maintain integrity and avoid conflicts of interest and hypocrisy. Loyalty. Fidelity, faithfulness, allegiance, and devotion are all synonyms for loyalty. Loyalty is the bond that holds the nation and the Federal Government together and the balm against dissension and conflict. It is not blind obedience or unquestioning acceptance of the status quo. Loyalty requires careful balancing among various interests, values, and institutions in the interest of harmony and cohesion. Accountability. Soldiers are required to accept responsibility for their decisions and the resulting consequences. This includes avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. Accountability promotes careful, well-thought-out decisionmaking and limits thoughtless action. Fairness. Open-mindedness and impartiality are important aspects of fairness. Soldiers must be committed to justice in the performance of their official duties. Decisions must not be arbitrary, capricious, or biased. Individuals must be treated equally and with tolerance. Caring. Compassion is an essential element of good government. Courtesy and kindness, both to those we serve and to those we work with, help to ensure individuals are not treated solely as a means to an end. Caring for others is the counterbalance against the temptation to pursue the mission at any cost. Respect. To treat people with dignity, to honor privacy, and to allow self-determination are critical in a government of diverse people. Lack of respect leads to a breakdown of loyalty and honesty within a government and brings chaos to the international community. Promisekeeping. No government can function for long if its commitments are not kept. Soldiers are obligated to keep their promises in order to promote trust and cooperation. Because of the importance of promisekeeping, leaders must only make commitments within their authority. Professionalism is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Professionalism is important for all of us who are part of the military institution in both active and Reserve components. It is important for all of us who love and respect the Army. We live in a time of change for the Army, and, as in all institutions during times of change and change in leadership, we need to emphasize leadership and return to the core values that are the foundation of our system. With the example of carelessness and other lapses in our leadership in the Army, it is important for us to go back and reexamine ourselves. It is vital for everyone who wears the Army uniform, to have consideration for others(superiors, peers and subourdinates) and for Army values. We must constantly remind ourselves of that. We all know what Army values are-the timeless values of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage-pronounced as leadership. Those are the values that have carried us as an institution over the years and have kept us professional at all times. Rarely does anyone talk about the next step or higher plain. I will give my perception of what I define as professionalism. In reading a number of quotes about the military calling, the one I like best is that of John F. Kennedy speaking to the graduating class of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, â€Å"What you have chosen to do for your country is the greatest contribution a man can make.† While professionalism is the basis of military service, it consists of many parts. One part is overcoming challenges. There will be many challenges over the next decades. In order to be successful, this nation needs soldiers with a level of skills, talents, drive and professionalism that we have not really experienced before, except in wartime. We must attain that degree of professionalism in the peacetime environment. Our leaders must be creative, innovative and exploit any opportunity to ensure the effective contribution of the Army to our military strategy and to national security. Professionalism was always leadership. The message is all to clear. The Army is not a place where anyone can afford to drift along. We need to study leadership in our duties and professional education. The practice of leadership must be constant. Clearly, the scope of professionalism has changed. The idea that we can be professionals at another time, and not be professionals all the time, has changed also. Today, professionalism is a shared approach. Reservists must be as professional as the active components that they support and the actives they sometimes replace. We must avoid the shortcuts in our units that create our own problems, for example, when we try to promote specialists to sergeants without a thorough grasp on whether or not they’re ready to be a leader, or abuse their power against good soldiers, or turn our heads and choose quantity over quality. Without the attention to professionalism, we lose the edge we have. Professionalism is mentoring, passing on the example and the values of professionalism. As leaders we all have a responsibility to pass on the torch and to mentor our subordinates. For the good of all our soldiers, my challenge to all of us is to monitor and encourage professionalism and inject that Army professionalism into the joint arena. Professionalism is being ready. If I may quote a line in the soldier’s creed, â€Å"I stand ready to deploy, engage and destory the enemies of the united states of america in close combat..† Our relevance to the mission of the modern Army is measured in what we can provide and accomplish today and not what we can provide at some time in the future to meet some vague threat. Integral to the concept of professionalism is a common vision to provide trained and ready soldiers and units to America’s Army. That vision rests on the pillars of readiness, recruiting, retention, resources and community relations. Professionalism also calls for physical and mental readiness. The missions that our government calls on us to perform today demand no less than physical and mental preparedness. That is why we have a physicaly training test every six months. We are above the standard. Professionalism is also taking care of one’s own. We recruit soldiers: retain families. We need to make soldiers feel that they are a part of something very important and that they have a sense of camaraderie which comes from the confidence that they belong to an organization that is well run and which is doing  meaningful and interesting things. Meeting the challenge of developing esprit de corps in soldiers and addressing the needs of the military families are fundamental to passing professionalism on to our soldiers. Finally, professionalism means supporting the profession. You do that by supporting the organizations and associations that support the profession. If there is one message I would like to have you carry from this essay, it is that there is no greater supporter of professionalism than I. I do not need to remind you that the new leadership of the Army are all team players and we are here today to play the ballgame. We are here until the game is over. I invite you to join me in the coming years to increase the professionalism of our force. A professional learns every aspect of the job. An amateur skips the learning process whenever possible. A professional carefully discovers what is needed and wanted. An amateur assumes what others need and want. A professional looks, speaks and dresses like a professional. An amateur is sloppy in appearance and speech. A professional keeps his or her work area clean and orderly. An amateur has a messy, confused or dirty work area. A professional is focused and clear-headed. An amateur is confused and distracted. A professional does not let mistakes slide by. An amateur ignores or hides mistakes. An amateur is surrounded by unfinished work piled on top of unfinished work. A professional remains level-headed and optimistic. An amateur gets upset and assumes the worst. A professional handles money and accounts very carefully. An amateur is sloppy with money or accounts. A professional faces up to other people’s upsets and problems. An amateur avoids others’ problems. A professional uses higher emotional tones: Enthusiasm, cheerfulness, interest, contentment. An amateur uses lower emotional tones: anger, hostility, resentment, fear, victim. A professional persists until the objective is achieved. An amateur gives up at the first opportunity. A professional produces more than expected. An amateur produces just enough to get by. A professional produces a high-quality product or service. An amateur produces a medium-to-low quality product or service. A professional has a promising future. An amateur has an uncertain future.

Biography of Albert J. Myer

Biography of Albert J. Myer Free Online Research Papers U.S. Army Signal Corps Founder: Albert James Myer (1828-1880) Albert J. Myer was born on September 20, 1828 in Newburgh, New York to the parents of Henry Beekman Myer and Eleanor Myer. Growing up Albert had great interest in the arts and sciences but he also had a strong interest in the military culture. Albert finished preparatory school and attended Geneva College in Geneva, New York, which was later renamed Hobart College. His collegiate achievements at Geneva College consisted of him receiving his Bachelors of Arts degree in 1847 at the age of 19 and four years later his Masters of Arts degree. While pursing his M.A. at Geneva College he was also taking course work at Buffalo Medical College and he received his MD the same year in 1851 at 24 years old. As a student he was know to take grasp of an idea and follow it to its lengths. His graduating thesis that was titled â€Å" A New Sign Language for Deaf Mutes,† was the start of what became know as the motion telegraphy that help pioneer his founding signal communications syste m in the Signal Corps. After graduation Albert went to Florida where he was in private practice for three years but in his free time he began to focus his attention on the signal system used by the military and navy. He felt that their current means of communicating through lights and various symbols was difficult and complex and he sought out to come up with a better system. In 1854 he received his commission in the U.S. Army as an assistant surgeon. Although he was heavily involved in his medical profession Myer continued to pursue his ideas of developing an efficient signal system. In 1857 he finally devised a system of signals which became the basis of code used during the Civil War. This system was called the â€Å"wig-wag signaling system† which is also known as the â€Å" four element code,† because it used one to four flag motions. Albert patented his inventions and presented it to the authorities and parties that he felt would embrace his hard work however many were not concern ed. Later that year August 24, 1857 Albert married Catherine Walden. In 1858, one year after Myer submitted his idea, he was notified that a board was appointed to examine his signal system, how it could be used in the field and how it could be introduced to the U.S. Army. The board approved Albert’s signal system in 1859. Albert became the first Army signal officer and was promoted to major in 1860. Myers system received its first use in the Navajo expedition (1860-1861). In June of 1861 he was sent orders from Washington, DC to form and command a signal corp. Albert performed both operational and administrative responsibilities during the first two years of the Civil War. Although he was engaged in the war he was vying to have the Signal Corps be established as a permanent Army entity. May 27, 1862 Albert Myer was promoted to lieutenant colonel for his service in the Army. On March 3, 1863 the Signal Corp became a permanent entity in the U.S. Army and Myer became a full bird colonel for his involvement in establishing the Signal Corp. Albert Myer was the chief signal officer for General George B. McClellan in the battles from Bull Run to Antietam. While in charge of the signal office he introduced the study of military signals at the U.S. Military academy and was a member of the central board of examination for the U.S. signal corps. Although Myer had originally introduced a better way to conduct aerial signals he had also come up with a better telegraphy system. Albert introduced an electrical telegraphy system to be used for field communications. This system was called the Beardslee telegraph. It consisted of a train of wagons which supported the devices capabilities to dial instead of key tapping Morse code. He developed this new telegraphy because it required less training for operators. Although this new telegraphy system was effective on the battlefield a telegraphy system and organization already existed, the U.S. Military Telegraph Service. The U.S. Military Telegraph Service was not military at al l. It was a civilian led service and Albert felt that as the chief signal officer of the U.S. Army he should have complete control of all electromagnetic telegraphy with in the Signal Corps. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton did not like Myers attempt to control all telegraphy in the signal corps. It is believed that Secretary Stanton had a vested interest in the civilian-run U.S. Military Telegraph Service. On November of 1863 Albert Myer was removed as chief signal officer and was re-assigned to the Military Division of the West Mississippi were he served for the remainder of the war. While serving with the Division of the West Mississippi he wrote the â€Å"Manual of Signals for the United States Army and Navy.† Under General Edward R. S. Canby he was appointed chief signal officer for the military division of the West Mississippi. The Secretary of War, Stanton, again relieved him stating that his appointment had not been confirmed. After the war Col. Albert was re-appointed chief signal officer on July 28, 1866. Albert Myer was the chief signal officer from August 21, 1867 until he died in 1880. Albert Myer received commission as a brigadier general on June 16, 1880, two months before his death. Gen Myer was not only known for his contributions in the signal corps but also for his involvement with the weather service. Among many honors on of them was the renaming of Fort Whipple, Virginia, as it was renamed in 1881, Fort Myer, Virginia. Research Papers on Biography of Albert J. A History of Synthetic Grass

A History of Synthetic Grass AstroTurf is a brand of artificial turf or synthetic grass. James Faria and Robert Wright of Monsanto Industries co-invented Astroturf. A patent for astroturf was filed for on December 25, 1965, and issued by the USPTO on July 25, 1967. The Evolution of Astroturf During the 50s and 60s, the Ford Foundation was studying ways to improve the physical fitness of young people. At the same time, the Chemstrand Company, a subsidiary of Monsanto Industries, were developing new synthetic fibers for use as tough carpeting. Chemstrand was encouraged to try to make the perfect urban sports surface for schools by the Ford Foundation. From 1962 to 1966, Chemstrand worked on creating new sports surfaces. The surfaces were tested for foot traction and cushioning, weather drainage, flammability and wear resistance. Chemgrass In 1964, the Creative Products Group installed a synthetic turf called Chemgrass at the Moses Brown School in Providence Rhode Island. This was the first large-scale installation of synthetic turf. In 1965, Judge Roy Hofheinz built the AstroDome in Houston, Texas. Fiscal aspects of health care delivery Research Paper

Fiscal aspects of health care delivery - Research Paper Example Although health insurance had developed much, there was shortage of health facilities in US. To increase the number of health facilities, the Hospital Survey and Construction Act of 1946 was enacted. The sources of money for construction of healthcare facilities came from the state and local sources. As the mode of delivery of health care improved, the cost of health care increased and many people were unable to pay the cost. In 1960, third–party payment systems for health care were created and they acted as the standard mode of health care cost payment in the country. The growth of third-party payment systems increased further the cost of health care. This is because many patients were able to access health care services without out-of-pocket expenses. Those uninsured found it more difficult to access health care services. In 1965, Medicare and Medicaid programs were established to give people more access to health care services. These programs were meant to cater for the elderly, disabled and the poor. Several acts were enacted between 1940 and 1993 and all were meant to improve the delivery of health care services. The acts were as a result of the demands and improvements in medical fields (Kotecki, McKenzie and Pinger, 2008). The US economy is concerned with the rising cost of health care services. Over the last decades the cost of healthcare services has been rising every year. Health care inflation will greatly affect the economy in the coming years due to a number of factors concerned with the delivery of these services. The number of uninsured people is also increasing and this is a concern because many of these people are low income earners, poor, elderly or disabled. Their accessibility to better health care services is very minimal (Jonas and Kovner, 2008). Quality of health care services has been reducing and it is estimated that between 40, 000 and 100, 000 Americans die each year due to medical

Final Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Final - Term Paper Example international market regions of Europe, it had to bear varied types of challenges and issues such as barriers in international trade, mitigation as well as investment (Beall, 2010). But due to the support of municipal government, all such international barriers reduced significantly that amplified its position and brand image in the entire globe among other rival players such as General Motors, Toyota etc. As a result of which the total sale and profitability of the organization enhanced that proved effective for the government of the Europe among other neighboring nations. The economic condition of the country enhanced as well as the rate o unemployment and poverty reduced to a significant extent (Ford.com, 2014). Other than this, at the time of expansion in the new market region of Europe, the organization of Ford Motors had to analyze the taste and preferences of the customers so as to improve its prosperity and portfolio in the market (Bradley, 2012). Moreover, due to the active participation of municipal government, the policy related issues such as tariff barriers, subsides to local firms etc reduced significantly that amplified its reputation and market share in the markets of Europe among others (Ford, 2014). The organization of Ford Motors had to bear varied types of political challenges such as tariff rates, trade restrictions due to political instability in the nation of Europe. As a result of which, the brand image and competitiveness of the organization of Ford Motors attained a serious set-back (Kazmi, 2010). Economic factors: inflation is one of the important causes that hindered the total sale and prosperity of the organization of Ford Motors within the region of Europe as compared to many others. As a result, the organization had failed to enhance its profit margin and demand of the products that hindered its portfolio and prosperity in the market among others. Social factors: as the preferences of the customers are changing at a rapid pace so
